Selena Gomez has been living life in the spotlight for years. With a career that covers the music, film, and cosmetic industries, she’s always serving up looks somewhere — using red carpets and press tours as opportune moments to display her chic fashion sense. From her teenage Disney days to gracing our October 2021 cover dressed in Chanel, we’ve watched this star’s style evolve before our very eyes. She is, without question, one of the most successful stars to come out of the Disney Channel universe — and she’s also one of the most stylish. For your viewing pleasure, we’ve tracked her glamorous style evolution throughout the years and rounded up 15 of her best looks of all time below.
2008, ALMA Awards
Gomez looked every bit a Disney dream at the 2008 American Latino Media Arts Awards, where she was nominated for an Outstanding Female Performance in a Comedy Television Series award for her role as Alex Russo in Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place series. The then 16-year-old actress wore a Grecian-inspired off-the-shoulder Marchesa dress with just the right amount of flow as she crossed the ALMA stage.
2010, MTV Music Awards
High-low dresses were all the rage in the early 2010s, and Gomez was right on trend with this look. In a metallic Reem Acra dress with a bedazzled neckline and matching silver heels, Gomez’s look matched the coveted award of the night at the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards — the iconic chrome MTV Moonman trophy.
2011, American Music Awards
Still into metallics, Gomez stepped away from dressing for Disney in search of a more mature, sexier sense of style at the 2011 American Music Awards. The Love You Like A Love Song singer channeled Old Hollywood when she wore a champagne-coloured satin gown with a plunging V-neckline by Armani that also featured a high leg slit — allowing for her glittering heels to be on display.
2013, Vanity Fair Oscar Party
Before there was such thing as balletcore, Gomez took our breaths away at the 2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party red carpet with this cream-coloured deconstructed corset meets tulle gown paired with a gold Judith Leiber clutch. For a hint of colour, the star added a pair of pink chandelier earrings by Lorraine Schwartz.
2013, Billboard Music Awards
Arriving at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, Gomez’s neon-accented Atelier Versace dress lit up the blue carpet. The gown featured a cross-body cutout and silver zippers that outlined the lime green, chartreuse, and hot pink piping running along the neckline. Before taking the stage to perform her dance track Come and Get It, she made sure this look had its moment.
2015, Met Gala
This backless white Vera Wang gown with black tassel straps was Gomez’s choice for the China: Through the Looking Glass themed Met Gala in 2015. To accent the look, her hair was adorned with matching white flowers and she went with a bold red lip to add a pop of colour.
2016, Grammy Awards
Can you tell that Gomez loves seems to love a good cutout gown yet? Gomez served up glitz and glamour at the 2016 Grammy Awards wearing this Studio 54 inspired navy blue disco dress with chic side cutouts and criss-cross back straps by Calvin Klein. Plus, her bejeweled hoop earrings took the look one step further.
2017, 13 Reasons Why Premiere
Further solidifying her love for a metallic fashion moment, Gomez wore an iridescent orange Oscar De La Renta dress hot off the Fall 2017 runway accessorized with a playful pair of Rebecca De Ravernel pompom earrings to the 2017 premiere of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why series, which featured songs by Gomez on its soundtrack.
2017, Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party
At the 2017 Harper’s Bazaar Icons party, Gomez arrived in style wearing a powder pink Valentino shift dress reminiscent of mod sixties style paired with a kelly green Prada clutch in hand and a choice of Gianvito Rossi fuchsia heels.
2018, Met Gala
Gomez’s 2018 Met Gala look was giving Disney princess all grown up, as she ascended the Met stairs in a custom Coach gown made with vintage cream silk gauze and hand-sewn lace. Behind her, a romantic ruffled train in tow. In this angelic ensemble, Gomez nailed the event’s “Heavenly Bodies” dress code.
2019, American Music Awards
If there’s one thing we can gather from the evolution of Selena’s style, it’s that she loves to break up her beloved neutral looks by going bright and bold with colour from time to time. At the 2019 American Music Awards, the star was a Versace vision of beauty in this lime green mini dress with a ruffled bow detail and a matching pair of pumps.
2019, Out in Paris
Though we love her red carpet fashions, Gomez’s chic street style is not to be overlooked. One of our personal favourite street style moments is this velvet Miu Miu polka dot coat she wore with a lacy Paco Rabanne slip dress underneath while making press rounds in Paris to promote her album Rare back in 2019.
2020, Dolittle Premiere
In 2020, Gomez walked the red carpet at the premiere of Dolittle in Los Angeles wearing a Givenchy gown from the French fashion house’s Fall 2019 Couture collection that featured a voluminous black skirt and a sheer baby pink turtleneck top.
2022, Out in New York City
True to her ability to take on any trend of the moment and pull off any colour, Gomez was spotted at a Saturday Night Live after-party back in December participating in the ‘Barbiecore’ trend with this head-to-toe pink PP Valentino ensemble accessorized with a classic pair of gold hoops.
2023, Golden Globe Awards
Confirming va va voom volume is an official component of her signature style as of late, Gomez attended the 2023 Golden Globes in January wearing a strapless black velvet Valentino gown full of drama with eggplant-coloured statement sleeves and diamond drop earrings. That night, her look gave off an air of sheer glamour.
