Emily Ratajkowski Brought Back One Divisive 2000s Trend at the 2023 VMAs
It’s been 10 years since Emily Ratajkowski starred in Robin Thicke’s infamous “Blurred Lines” music video—her first and only music video credit—but these days the supermodel, podcaster, and writer doesn’t need to star in a video in order to be granted an invite to the Video Music Awards. A decade later she’s so much more than just that girl from that video. Which is probably why MTV tapped the 32-year-old as a presenter at this year’s show.
Ahead of the ceremony, which is taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, EmRata walked the red—ahem—pink carpet in an updated version of the handkerchief dress, a staple of 2000s fashion trends. Ratajkowski’s two-piece set included a green scarf-top worn halter-style crisscrossing the chest and revealing several inches of abs. The green of the top matched the tied waistband of EmRata’s uneven skirt and contrasted the skirt’s burnt orange floral pattern.
Ratajkowksi wore her “glazed amber” hair in center-parted waves to complement the ’70s-inspired natural glam makeup.
The bright green hue and feminine skirt is in line with the look she recently wore while attending an event at New York Fashion Week: a see-through lace green halter dress that she styled without a bra.
Believe it or not, Emily Ratajkowski didn’t even attend the 2013 VMAs, where Thicke and Miley Cyrus performed an interesting rendition of his hit song. But as far as we know, Thicke will not be in attendance this year. And don’t worry about Cyrus. Even though the 30-year-old is nominated for several awards tonight, she’s basically promised to be on her best behavior (at least, depending on your interpretation of the lyrics to her new song “Used to Be Young”).
But don’t fret! I’m sure some other crazy thing will happen onstage tonight. It wouldn’t be the VMAs if it didn’t.
