David Beckham just scored this summer’s best beach-ready look
Before you head off on a beach holiday you might, like us, take your packing very seriously: at GQ, we look to some of the best-dressed beach goers in history for a little inspiration on what to carefully load our stainless-steel Rimowa cases with.
Nobody has ever quite done sandy shore jaunts quite as well, in our minds, as the cooler-than-cool French actor Alain Delon. With thigh-flashing, striped swimming briefs and throw-on navy twill shirts sitting at the forefront of his vacation wardrobe, he knows how to do ultra-chic beachy style. Likewise, Sean Connery (in and out of character as the sartorial James Bond) knows a good beach-ready look: short shorts, camp-collared shirts and matching pink co-ords. Then there’s Jay-Z educating the less gym-honed of us on how to cover up in style back in 2018: wear a suit, but go bare underneath. Ultra-sophisticated and totally replicable, they together present a demonstration in timeless style.
That said, as of this week you can also add David Beckham to the list of beachwear aficionados, and there’s not a sarong in sight. While holidaying with the rest of his family in Greece, Becks has shown that, while going for uber-chic swimwear (check out Prada’s monochromatic offering) is always a good idea, there’s always room to be a little flamboyant with your gear. Case in point: the former footballer took to the sand and sea in a variety of bold and colourful Versace baroque-print swim shorts.
Why not, we say. After all, 2020 is the year to try to find fun wherever possible and a good place to start is with your holiday gear (after all, up until recently we couldn’t actually go abroad, and even now, it comes with its complications). So this summer do as Golden Balls has done and go hell for print, colour and eye-catching goodness.
Below are the best David Beckham-worthy swim shorts you can buy right now, even if you are just heading to Hampstead Heath ponds.
