David Beckham is no stranger to fierce competition — now he just faces it in the kitchen.
Brooklyn Beckham, David’s eldest child, recently told Insider that he and his father often have cooking competitions.
The aspiring chef — who sat down with Insider to discuss his partnership with the kitchen-appliance company Typhur — credits his father for inspiring his cooking passion.
“Growing up, my dad has always loved being in the kitchen,” Brooklyn Beckham said. “And as a very young baby, I was lucky enough to travel with him to different places in the world and try different cuisines. I think my love for cooking and trying different cuisines definitely came from my dad.”
Beckham told Insider his dad’s best dish is spaghetti bolognese, which they learned at a pasta-making class in Italy when the soccer legend was still playing for AC Milan from 2009 to 2010.
“He learned from, obviously, the best place you could learn how to make pasta,” Beckham said. “He used to cook it all the time when I was a little kid. I would be so excited coming home from school and seeing my dad make spaghetti bolognese.”
Beckham has been working on his own version of the dish, which he (controversially) cooks with a wine cork in the bolognese. He’s also still trying to perfect his dad’s famous truffle risotto.
“I still need a few more lessons,” Beckham said. “I don’t know what he does to it, but it’s just a little bit better than mine. When I see my dad, we always find ourselves having a little cooking competition.”
Beckham has also gotten cooking tips from Gordon Ramsay, who has been close with his family for decades.
“He taught me how to make beef wellington,” Beckham said, referring to one of Ramsay’s most iconic dishes.
“It actually isn’t as hard as people think it is. It’s pretty straightforward, to be honest,” he added. “I’ve made it a few more times after that and each time it just keeps getting better. You learn these little tricks, which is really neat.”
Beckham has faced plenty of criticism for his cooking videos, but he told Insider he’s “used to the hate.”
“It doesn’t really bother me,” he added. “Cooking makes me happy. I have more important things to worry about than people saying a little bit of rubbish about me.”
Beckham also has Snoop Dogg in his corner. The rapper, who has been close with Beckham’s family for 30 years, recently defended his cooking videos in an interview with Insider.
“My dad has known Snoop Dogg for a very long time, and I’m a very big fan of his,” Beckham said. “The advice he’s given me is, ‘Do your thing. As long as you’re happy and work hard, that’s all that matters.’”
